This Viennese hot chocolate is super rich, and creamy, and absolutely decadent. It’s the type of hot chocolate you want to indulge in on special occasions. Typically you melt a piece of chocolate, or add whipped cream to your hot chocolate to make it richer. In this case, we did all this, and we also added egg yolks!

But of course, being almost Valentine’s day we had to splurge and stirred these cute melting hearts chocolates in our drinks too.  We’ve all seen these hot-chocolate-on-a-stick spoons in different shapes and forms in stores around Valentine’s day, but making your own is so much more fun.  All you really need is a silicon mold, different chocolate varieties, and wooden sticks.

You can then let your imagination go free, and add flavors too.  I added a pinch of cinnamon to some, a pinch of cayenne to others, and for the white chocolate spoons, I added some coconut essence.  You can mix all chocolates in a layered chocolate spoon too.  It’s a great ‘cooking’ project with kids, especially if you have girls.

When we were kids and wanted to splurge, but didn’t have whipped cream on hand, we made our hot chocolate with egg yolks. We whipped the egg yolks with sugar until they became pale and creamy, and slowly added them to our hot milk and cocoa, to thicken it.  Egg yolks are fantastic emulsifiers and that’s the idea here in this recipe. It’s a wonderful way to add richness to the drink, without adding more fat.

Of course, kids being kids, they had to add a huge doll0p of whipped cream to their hot chocolate.  For the adult version, I added a splash of cognac too, and skipped the whipped cream – it still tasted very rich.

You can either stir these cute chocolate spoons in your hot drink, or as the kids did, eat the leftovers like a lollipop. Either way, it’s an adorable treat for adults and kids alike.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 heaping tablespoons good quality cocoa powder
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 tbs sugar
  • 3 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cognac or rum (optional)
  • whipped cream (optional)
  • different chocolate bars for making the hot chocolate melting spoons
Instructions
Make the Viennese hot chocolate:
  1. Mix cocoa powder with a 1/4 cup milk until smooth, then add to the rest of the milk and heat on the stove.
  2. Whip the egg yolks with the sugar until pale and creamy.
  3. Add a bit of the hot liquid, spoon by spoon, to the egg yolk mixture to temper it, then slowly add the egg yolks to the milk. Add vanilla and stir.
  4. Heat gently if needed but do not bring to a boil.
  5. Serve with a melting heart hot chocolate spoon (see below), whipped cream or both.

  6. Optionally, add a splash of cognac, or rum.

Make the melting hearts hot chocolate spoons:
  1. Melt different types of chocolates (white, milk, dark), separately over a double boiler.

  2. Add 1 tbs of coconut oil to each of the melted chocolates, and optionally add any other flavorings like cayenne pepper, cinnamon, vanilla, coconut essence, or others.

  3. Pour the melted chocolate into small, heart-shaped silicon molds, and leave in the fridge for 15-20 min.  (You can alternate different chocolate types for a layered look.)

  4. Take out of the fridge and while the chocolate is not firm enough stick a wooden spoon/stick in the middle of each mold.
  5. Leave in the fridge to firm completely.
